While July 4 is the day for fireworks and picnics and such (and now a military parade at the behest of our Commander in Chief), the fact is that July 2 is the anniversary of our nation’s real Independence Day — the day Continental Congress voted for independence on this day.

We hope you’ll take the time to browse through our painstakingly gathered online collection of declarations — of independence, of rights, for equality, freedom — on our Declaration Project site. It includes a one-of-a-kind collection of declarations the world over, many of which were inspired by our own Declaration of Independence, and many of which preceded and influenced our Declaration.

Like virtually all of our work, this was a purely volunteer effort. This particular labor of love was a collaboration between me and our Democracy Cafe (DemocracyCafe.org) board member Danielle Olson.

If the spirit moves you, consider posting your own declaration on the ‘My Declaration’ segment of this site, which includes moderns declarations from actual and aspiring citizens of many ages and backgrounds across the fruited plain of the U.S. Maybe even consider making a donation to the cause: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme2/DemocracyCafe

Hopefully you’ll come away with a much keener appreciation of what is risked, and gained, when one puts it on the line to improve the human condition for one and all.
