Not only are our flagship endeavors, Socrates Cafe and Democracy Cafe, a moveable philosophical and democratical (my invention) feast — gathering places and spaces sometimes close, so people have to find a new venue at which to convene (the Socrates Cafe I started over 20 years ago in Montclair has managed to meet every week, though it has had to change locales a number of times over the years) — but even when they stay in one place in this transient society, sometimes those who took the time and effort to start a group have to move on.
At the long-time group in Redmond, CA, this announcement was recently posted by their founder:
Hi Redmond Socrates Cafe Members:
Happy new year to you – with a new year come new changes. Pete and Dale, our longstanding organizers are moving on to focus on other cool things in life. Thanks to both of them for keeping this group going over the years! Thanks guys!
Opportunity: I’m looking for a handful of volunteers to step up and help lead the group. I did it for years and can coach you and help with a smooth transition – the commitment is primarily 1) showing up 2) Tending to minor updates on our Meetup pages 3) Facilitating the conversation.
If you’re interested, send me a message. We’d co-host a couple until you’ve got the hang of things.
-Scott
So the philosophical and democratical beat goes on, with new dedicated folks stepping forward to carry the torch, as Pete and Dale move on. It’s a beauty to behold.
