Please join us via Zoom video on June 19, the 155th commemoration of Juneteenth, to explore: How do we achieve absolute equality of rights today?

Juneteenth.com describes this incredibly pivotal day in U.S. history — also known as ‘America’s second Independence Day’ thus: “Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th — [155 years ago on the day we gather] — that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.”

Why are we exploring the proposed question? As you’ll read in this fabulous article: “Although the Emancipation Proclamation was the law of the land beginning January 1, 1863, the enslaved people of Texas only began to learn about their freedom a year and a half later when union soldiers embarked at Galveston on June 19th, 1865 and announced the ‘absolute equality of rights’ between slave owners and slaves.”

Please be sure to read the Emancipation Proclamation before taking part.
